Kya Henningson, APRN, FNP-C, PMHNP-BC

As a dual-certified Family Nurse Practitioner and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, I provide comprehensive psychiatric care for adolescents and adults across the full spectrum of mental health conditions. I have a special interest in perinatal psychiatry, women's mental health, and the treatment of mood and anxiety disorders throughout the reproductive lifespan- including perimenopause and hormone replacement therapy.

My philosophy of care is simple: I treat every patient the way I would want my own family members to be treated. I believe the best outcomes come from a collaborative partnership between provider and patient. Together, we develop individualized, person-centered treatment plans that honor each patient's unique experiences, goals, and needs. I prioritize accessibility, close follow-up, and open communication, ensuring patients feel supported throughout their mental health journey.

I earned my Bachelor of Science degree from Minnesota State University, Mankato, and my Master of Science in Nursing from Spring Arbor University in Michigan. My background in both primary care and psychiatry allows me to take a holistic approach to mental health treatment, recognizing the important connection between physical and emotional well-being.

Outside of practice, I am proud to call the Brainerd Lakes Area home. As a busy mom of two energetic young boys, I understand the challenges of balancing family, work, and self-care. When I'm not caring for patients, I enjoy spending time outdoors fishing, camping, gathering around bonfires, and tackling home improvement projects.

I also share my life with three beloved dogs: Nova, a red Labrador Retriever, and Pablo and Pedro, two Yorkshire Terriers. Patients may occasionally meet Pablo, who enjoys accompanying me to work and is known for providing therapeutic snuggles and emotional support during visits.
